Popular Torrent And File Hosting Websites Blocked In India

It seems that many widely held free file hosting and torrent websites are presently unavailable and unreachable in India. A number of sources are reporting that file sharing websites and torrent websites are being blocked by ISPs in India. Roughly more than 219 sites have been ordered by Delhi High Court to be blocked.

I tested out a couple of sites myself, but not a single of the following sites worked on my ISP network (on my local cable internet provider).

Here is the list of few Popular Torrent And File Hosting Websites Blocked In India.

  • (torrent site)
  • (torrent site)
  • (torrent site)
  • (file hosting site)
  • (torrent site)
  • (torrent VPN site)
  • (torrent site)
  • (torrent site)
  • (file hosting site)
  • (file hosting site)

My local ISP (ICC cable network), who use BSNL as their internet gateway, showed me a blank page on all the sites without any message on all the above sites mentioned above. Yet, it seems that different ISPs have taken a different line of attack. I tested the same sites using Reliance USB dongle, and the result was something else giving us following message.

I tried checking out the websites on my Idea Cellular 3G network, and astonishingly all these sites were working appropriately without a glitch.

It Means that, some ISP’s (I suppose BSNL and Reliance) have blocked these sites. In contrast, the sites are working fine on Idea Cellular 3G network.
Also, it is fascinating to see that it is not a blanket ban on file hosting and torrent sites. Few other torrent sites like KickAss Torrents, and few others were still available.

How Did This Block Come Into Result?

This Order is based on the case filed by Multi Screen Media (Sony TV) in concern with illegal file hosting of videos and clips related to World Cup Football matches for which MSM have sole rights.  The sites that have been blocked are more popular with Indians for presenting Bollywood and South Indian movie torrents.

Can the whole Websites be blocked?

No, complete websites cannot be blocked.

A court can only give orders in regards to specific invading urls and cannot order whole sites to be blocked. In a Madras High Court order date April 25th, 2012, they have specifically mentioned the following

“The interim injunction is granted only in respect of a particular URL where the infringing movie is kept and not in respect of the entire website. Further, the applicant is directed to inform about the particulars of URL where the interim movie is kept within 48 hours.“

Keeping this in mind, it is interesting to note that entire sites have been blocked.
